These online learning modules are Part 1 of a blended learning course designed specifically for Radiographers & Technologists. The modules equip participants with the knowledge needed to perform effective IV cannulations and administer radiopharmaceuticals. Topics include vein and venous assessment, quality patient care and management—including complications and anaphylaxis—accurate tracer dose calculation, and procedures for managing radioactive spills. After completing this online learning you are required to complete Part 2 of the blended learning course: the IV Cannulation Simulation Workshop, delivered either virtually or in person at The Christie’s clinical training centre.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop the necessary skills to effectively perform IV Cannulations and administer radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Develop awareness of quality patient care and management, including complications, anaphylaxis, and ongoing care.
  • Describe how to accurately calculate tracer doses.
  • Develop the skills and knowledge to effectively manage and clean up radioactive spills.

    Mary Gbongay

    Mary qualified as a radiographer in 2007 and went on to become a nuclear medicine technologist in 2016, following her move from the Christie radiology department in 2015. She went on to lead the PET-CT department for three years, where she also contributed to the PET-CT Academy and developed in-house training programmes. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mary completed her master’s degree in neuroimaging research at the University of Edinburgh. Alongside her role, she also works as a technical assessor for the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), the government-appointed body responsible for assessing and accrediting organisations.

    Rachelle Wood

    Rachelle, a qualified Operating Department Practitioner since 2010, joined The Christie as an Anaesthetics and Recovery Practitioner and later trained in chemotherapy. In 2022, she became a Senior Clinical Skills Trainer at the Christie School of Oncology. Since 2023, she has also served as a trainer/assessor for IV cannulation with the PET-CT Academy, leading workshops and assessments to ensure safe practice.

    Wendy Jennison

    Wendy Jennison is the Chief Technologist in Nuclear Medicine at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, where she leads the management, training, and professional development of her team. With a career spanning over three decades, Wendy brings deep expertise in PET-CT and SPECT-CT imaging, as well as the administration of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. She holds an MSc in Nuclear Medicine from Salford University and has contributed to the MSc/PGDip Nuclear Medicine Imaging course as a lecturer and course team member, sharing her passion for high standards and professional excellence in clinical practice.
