Central Venous Access Devices Simulation Workshop

Central venous access devices (CVADs) play a vital role in the delivery of intravenous therapies, contrast administration, blood sampling, and long-term patient management. Safe assessment, access, and maintenance of these devices are essential to minimise complications and ensure positive patient outcomes.
This practical one-day course provides an introduction to the most commonly used central venous access devices, including tunnelled central venous access devices (CVADs), peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), and totally implanted venous access devices (TIVADs). You will explore the indications for each device, patient considerations, referral pathways, infection prevention measures, and the principles of aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT).
Through presentations, demonstrations, and supervised practical activities, you will develop the knowledge and confidence required to assess, access, flush, maintain, and troubleshoot these devices safely in clinical practice. The course also covers the recognition and management of common complications, including infection, thrombosis, occlusion, and device-related skin injuries.
This course is suitable for healthcare professionals involved in the care, maintenance, or use of central venous access devices within diagnostic, treatment, and outpatient settings.

Learning Outcomes

• Describe the indications, features, and clinical applications of tunnelled central venous access devices (CVADs), PICCs, and totally implanted venous access devices (TIVADs).
• Apply the principles of infection prevention, hand hygiene, and aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT) when caring for and accessing central venous access devices.
• Assess central venous access devices prior to use, recognising signs of infection, thrombosis, occlusion, and other device-related complications.
• Demonstrate safe techniques for accessing, flushing, maintaining, and dressing CVADs, PICCs, and TIVADs in accordance with best practice.
• Recognise common complications and implement appropriate troubleshooting and escalation procedures to support safe patient care.
